LizardSkin® Ceramic Insulation

Typical Uses
LizardSkin® Ceramic Insulation is used by custom car, street rod, race car and truck builders as well as RV owners to reduce heat and noise transfer and seal unexposed body surfaces. When applied under fender wells, it can help prevent “starring” from stones and gravel. It is best applied with our special spray gun to a clean and dry primed or painted rust-free surface. Typical applications include firewalls, floor pans, transmission tunnels, doors, hoods, truck lids, under headliners, inside fenders, panel van walls and more. It may be painted if desired, with no loss of thermal or acoustic performance.

Important: Manufacturers Recommendations
For best results, LizardSkin must be applied with a recommended spray gun/nozzle at 50-70 psi air pressure. For specific recommendations, consult product label. Brushing is recommended only for small area touch up.

  How to calculate gallons needed:

  • Measure length x width of all surfaces to be coated
  • Add all numbers for total area in square feet
  • Divide by 25 for LizardSkin® Ceramic Insulation or by 50 for gallons of LizardSkin® SC needed

Note: If spraying LCI on both interior and exterior floor, spray .0020 on interior floor, and .0020 on exterior floor to achieve .0040 total.  Recommended LCI thickness:  40 to 60/1000ths. Recommended LSC thickness: 20 to 25/1000ths

Typical Tools Required:

  • LizardSkin® Super Pro spray gun kit

  • Variable speed 3/8”-1/2” electric drill

  • Box cutter or knife

  • Compressed air source: 60-100 psi @ 5 cfm(min
  • Access to water for cleanup

Surface Preparation
Surface to be coated must be clean, dry and free of rust or other corrosion. Mask areas not intended to be sprayed since coating will adhere to any unmasked area. Carbon steel surfaces require primer. Aluminum and stainless steel do not need primers but must be clean and dry.

Product Preparation/Mixing
LizardSkin® should be mixed thoroughly using a power drill with the mixer paddle bit.

  • Open the container using the tear tab on the side of the top.
  • Pull tab and remove lid.
  • Mix LizardSkin® using variable speed drill and stir paddle bit at low rpm (300 or less) to a smooth consistency. (Normally 2-4 min.)
  • Clean stir paddle in water bucket immediately after mixing. Replace lid on bucket until ready to spray.
  • After mixing, lift mix paddle from LizardSkin.  If product drips off slowly, it is ready to apply.

LizardSkin® Sound Control Formula
LizardSkin® SC formula is an advanced, water-based composition of high-grade acrylic binders with sound-damping particles. Proven sound damping technology enables LizardSkin® SC to dramatically reduce noise when properly applied. It also protects surfaces from moisture and corrosion and can withstand temperatures to 300° F. (149° C.)

LizardSkin® SC is used by custom car, street rod, truck builders and RV owners who want to reduce unwanted noise and/or enhance the sound of their high end audio systems. It is best applied by special spray gun to a clean and dry primed or painted rust-free steel. Typical applications include firewalls, floor pans, transmission tunnels, doors, hoods, trunk lids, under headliners, inside fenders, panel van walls and other areas that generate vibration and noise. For maximum acoustic performance, coat entire interior surface and the floor inside and out.

  • Dramatically reduces noise and vibration

  • Protect surfaces from moisture and corrosion

  • Withstand temperatures to 300° F. (149ª C.)
  • Class A Fire-rated
  • A 2- gallon container covers approximately 100 sq. ft. at 20/1000's (Max thickness 40/1000's for maximum effectiveness)

APPLYING LIZARDSKIN® CERAMIC INSULATION & LIZARDSKIN® SC
For maximum sound control and insulation performance, both LizardSkin coatings may be used, but it is important that LizardSkin® SC always be applied FIRST. When used in tandem, LizardSkin® SC should be applied at least 12 hours prior to application of LizardSkin® Ceramic Insulation. If ambient temperature is below 70ºF, allow 24 hours between coats.

LizardSkin® SuperPro Spray Gun Kit
The SuperPro spray gun kit provides exactly what’s needed for professionals and hobbyists to properly apply amazing LizardSkin® coatings Typical spray guns used for paint application are simply not engineered to handle the higher density of these high technology coatings. To help facilitate this process for builders and manufacturers, LizardSkin LLC is pleased to offer the proven quality of the SuperPro spray gun.

  • Professional quality spray gun designed to handle the high density and viscosity of LizardSkin® Ceramic Insulation and LizardSkin® SC – Sound Control Formula with extra nozzles and flexible spray wand for hard to reach areas

  • Included one-quart cup can be used for application to small areas

  • One stir paddle (attaches to drill)

  • One 48” siphon hose (5/8 Inch ID Thick Wall Rubber)

  • One 12-inch siphon tube (1/2 Inch ID, 5/8 Inch OD Metal Conduit)

  • Two hose clamps, one threaded hose barb
  • LizardSkin coatings should not be applied when abient temperature is below 70 degrees.

Using the Pro Spray Gun Kit

For Small Area Applications
Use standard one-quart cup supplied with spray gun. Cup should be filled directly after mixing the product.

For Large Area Applications
Use the “Super Pro” spray kit attachment hose set to siphon material directly out of the LizardSkin® container. To prepare spray gun:

  • Use wrench to remove pickup tube from bottom of the spray gun.

  • Attach 5/8” hose barb fitting to bottom of the spray gun and tighten snugly.

  • Slide hose over the fitting/metal standoff tube.

  • Using box cutter or knife, cut an “X” in center of plastic lid to accommodate tube. If desired, attach clamp to hose below lid to hold siphon tube to bottom of pail.

Spraying with the Super Pro Gun
Attach air hose to gun with quick connect fitting and adjust air pressure to 50-70 psi . (Air course must deliver minimum 5 CFM.) The orifice nozzle in front of spray gun adjusts feed rate and spray pattern. Tightening the nozzle will reduce flow of material; loosening will increase flow. Increased flow may require additional air flow/pressure. Test spray prior to applying

Tips For Best Results:

Higher air pressure produces a finer pattern, but pressures over 100 psi may prematurely dry and damage the coating as it is being applied. Spray LizardSkin® evenly holding gun 6-9” away from surface. Avoid runs. It is best to spray a light tack coat and allow to set before building thickness with additional coats. LizardSkin® dulls as it dries. Test dryness by placing thumb on coating and turning 90°. If coating sticks, additional drying time is needed. Preferred wet thickness is 0.010-015” (10-15 mils or 0.25-0.5mm).

Clean Up IMMEDIATELY
When full coat is applied, pull tube and hose out of material bucket and immediately place in bucket of clean water, triggering until spraying clean water. Remove nozzle/orifice assembly and clean gun and nozzle with soap and water.

Drying Time
Additional coats may be applied after 20 minutes or when surface is dry to the touch. (Use thumb test as described above.) Drying time is dependant on ambient and surface temperatures. The hotter the surface or ambient temperature, the faster the dry time. Before sanding or other finishing, allow to cure 24 hours at 70º F. or higher. Do not apply LizardSkin® at temperatures below 70º F.

Coverage
One gallon of LizardSkin® SC - Sound Control Formula will cover 50 sq. ft. at a thickness of .020” wet thickness on flat surfaces.
